Artist statement

Monica Vlad specializes in designing and developing new media installations and soundscapes, employing a blend of both contemporary and traditional technologies as expressive and communicative mediums. Her focus lies in exploring the spatial potentials of these technologies within the realm of audiovisual communication and art.

Her portfolio encompasses audiovisual performances, media sculptures, and installations that transcend mere functionality and architecture, imbuing each location with a distinct identity. Monica aims to craft immersive experiences that envelop participants within her pieces.

In her sonic compositions, Monica delves into a spectrum ranging from ambient and experimental noises to frequencies both audible and nearly imperceptible, spanning from minimalism to glitch and traversing analog and digital domains. Her artistic research extends into areas like sound localization, surround sound psychoacoustics, acousmatic and quadrophonic sound, and sound imaging. Viewers are encouraged to engage dynamically with her work by navigating the space, allowing them to experience varied sonic and visual characteristics unique to each location.

Monica also pioneers new projection techniques to complement her soundscapes, creating a wholly immersive reality through light and sound. Her light installations utilize tangible light forms that viewers can interact with directly, inviting them to explore the sculptural qualities of light within the space. These installations are characterized by their performative and participatory nature, transforming viewers into integral components of the landscape, disrupting conventional exhibition space autonomy and asserting their own spatial and temporal narratives.
